The global marine environment and biodiversity conservation movement by diverse stakeholders that has increasingly grown since the 1990s, along with the penetration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in recent years, is set to become a standard in Japan as well.

Through the promotion of sustainable seafood in Japan since 2015, Seafood Legacy has contributed to the achievement of a sustainable marine environment and to SDG14 (Life Below Water) and SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). However, further acceleration will be required.

Accordingly, effective January 20, the Company has appointed Dr. Aiko Yamauchi, who has experience in the fields of marine environment conservation and promoting sustainability of the seafood industry at international environmental NGOs and other organizations, to the position of COO/Vice President. Under its new structure, Seafood Legacy will continue to strengthen the promotion of sustainable seafood together with an even greater number of companies, NGOs, and government bodies in the seafood industry.

■ Comment from Aiko Yamauchi on her appointment to Director and Vice President

Heading toward 2030, Japan and the world are entering an era that demands more effective efforts to achieve a transformation to a sustainable seafood industry based on a sound marine environment. I feel that people’s expectations toward the societal role that Seafood Legacy should play in this era are growing day by day. I will carry out my responsibilities to make Seafood Legacy an aid to Japan’s seafood industry, now standing at a key crossroad, in achieving sustainable development and passing down a bountiful sea to future generations.
